VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese fans will soon get the chance to watch world-class volleyball when the country hosts a group of the World Women’s Volleyball Grand Prix in the northern province of Vinh Phuc’s Gymnasium on June 26-29.

The Viet Nam Volleyball Federation made the announcement after meeting with the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) chairman of the Sports Events Council, Shanrit Nongprasert, in March.

According to the schedule, four teams - Brazil, Turkey, Kazakhstan and Germany - will compete in group B to be hosted by Vietnam for the first time.

Brazil will meet Kazakhstan, while Germany will face Turkey in the opening matches next Thursday.

The organising committee will hold a press conference in Hanoi to discuss details of the tournament today.

The Grand Prix draws 12 top teams from Asia, Europe and America to compete in three groups with the five best going to the final round in Yokohama, Japan to compete for a grand prize of US$2 million.

During this month’s competition, local fans can watch their favourite players from Kazakhstan, who succeeded, twice in a row, at the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship-VTC Cup in Vietnam.

Yelena Pavlova, from Rahat Club, who won the Best Player at the tournament last year, was the audience’s favourite attacker as she dealt powerful spikes which helped her team take the VTC Cup.

Among the main Kazakhstan squad competing at the Grand Prix are Tatyana Pyurova and Lyudmila Anarbayeva of Zhetyssu team, who also competed at the VTC Cup this year and will team up with Olga Karpova and Korinna Ishimtseva.

Half of Kazakhstan team’s players will take advantage of the Vietnamese fan support when they play at Vinh Phuc’s Gymnasium; for many of the team players it will be like playing on home turf.

Two years ago, Kazakhstan finished second in the Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship but ranked 10th at the Grand Prix last year.

Vietnam now has solid experience in organising international level tournaments, annually hosting the International Women’s Volleyball Tournament-VTV Cup for the AVC.

Vinh Phuc Province also hosted the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship last year where teams from China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Thailand and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea participated.

Viet Nam Volleyball Federation’s general secretary Ha Manh Thu said that the organising committee is ready for the Grand Prix with a budget of over VND1 billion ($62,000).

In Vietnam, volleyball was the second sport (after football) to enter the professional arena three years ago.
