Miss Vietnam Nguyen Thuy Trang (4th from left) is among the winners of Miss Universe 2008’s Traditional Costumes Contest held last night in Binh Duong Province
Dainty and demure in appearance but displaying a quiet confidence, Miss Vietnam headlined the 10 winners of Miss Universe 2008’s Traditional Costumes Contest held last night in southern Binh Duong Province.

Broadcast live via Ho Chi Minh City Television’s HTV9 Channel, 80 international contestants enchanted millions in a brash, multicolor display of extravagant national costumes.

The Saigon Factory Outlet Mall’s Lions Theater hosted the spectacular event in which the beauties dazzled the seven-member jury with attires that varied from simple to ornate and boldly modern reinventions of traditional wear.

Each costume carried the unique elements of each nation’s cultural characteristics, inspired by themes as diverse as the ocean, nature, peace, and national heroes.

The costumes were made from a combination of rare and common materials and ornaments, designed to best capture the attractive curves and illuminate the charms of the international beauties.

The other nine contestants who also won the honor of best traditional costume included representatives from Albania, Colombia, Dominican Republic, India, Kosovo, Mexico, Peru, South Africa and Venezuela.

Each girl was awarded a Samsung Armani cell phone worth VND15 million (US$893).

Gala for good

HCMC’s Sheraton Hotel this evening will host a Gala Dinner and Charity Auction for all the contestants organized by Thanh Nien Communications JSC.

The beauties will auction off gifts they brought from their home countries to donate to Thanh Nien newspaper’s Nguyen Thai Binh Scholarship Fund, which was started in 1992 to help disadvantaged Vietnamese students.

The wares include various jewelries made of rare and precious stones.

Other goods range from national costumes, watches, accessories, furniture pieces and several artworks.
