Val Tidone International Music Competitions is a system of annual music contests for all kinds of musical instruments and players of different ages held in Piacenze, Italy. At this year’s competitions, three Vietnamese contestants won high prizes: pianist Luu Hong Quang carried off the second prize (no first prize), accordionist Tran Thi Thu Huong won the fourth prize, pianist Luu Duc Anh took the fourth prize and a certificate of merit.

Brothers Luu Hong Quang and Luu Duc Anh began playing piano at the age of 6. Both of them are students of Prof., Dr. Tran Thu Ha, former Director of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music. Previously, Luu Hong Quang, 18, won the special prize at the Chopin Asia Contest in Japan in January 2006 and the third prize at the Val Tidone International Music Competitions in June 2006. He won a full scholarship to study at the Australia International Music Conservatory.

Quang’s younger brother, Luu Duc Anh, 15, won the second prize at the prestigious Autumn Concord Competition 2007 in Vietnam before receiving the fourth prize and a certificate of merit at this competition, in which he was the only Asian competitor.

Tran Thi Thu Huong participated in the accordion competition for players of 18-37 years old. Her group gathered the best accordionists from Russia, France, Serbia, Denmark, Ukraine, etc. Huong was the only female and Asian contestant at the Val Tidone International Music Competitions.

Huong is now a young lecturer at the Vietnam National Music Conservatory and she is following a master’s degree under the guidance of Associate Professor Luu Quang Minh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Music Conservatory. She won the fourth prize in the International Accordion Competition in Beijing, China in 2002 and the fourth position at the International Accordion Contest held by the UNESCO in Hungary in 2004.

Val Tidone International Music Competitions is a prestigious event for 12-37 year old contestants. Prizes are defined based on a certain point ranking. Contestants are presented prizes equivalent to the points they obtain so the contests may not have prize winners though they attract hundreds of competitors.

The competitions also have a prestigious jury, including Prof. Sergio Perticaroli (Italy), Prof. Carlo Levi Minzi (Italy), Prof. Ratkio Delorko (Austria), Prof. Pavel Gililov (Russia), Prof. Ayami Ikeba (Japan) and Prof. Dmitri Barhkirov (teacher of Vietnamese People’s Artist, Pianist Dang Thai Son).
