Six arrested in sex crackdown

June 16, 2008
Quang Ninh police detained six people in a crackdown on child prostitution in the northern province.
Police arrested suspected sex brokers Nguyen Thi Ben, Nguye Thi Thuy and Le Van Nam from Cam Pha Town in Quang Ninh and Vu Thi Bon from Hai Duong Province.
Alleged customers Do Duong and Doan Van Thuc were also taken in for having sex with one of the teenage girls.
Thuc is the deputy manager of TKV Investment and Trading Company, a subsidiary of the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) and Duong is his assistant.
The initial investigation show the brokers persuaded two students, one aged 15 and the other 16, to have sex with Duong and Thuc at the Heritage Hotel in the town of Ha Long on May 26.
In his confession, Duong said he and his assistant paid VND3 million (US$1,800) each to the brokers for the girls.
The girls told police they received just a few million dong from the brokers.
“There are still many other gang members at large,” Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Tran Huu Ta chief of Quang Ninh Police’s Investigation Department said.
“We are still hunting them. We are encouraging them to give themselves up to the police.”
Earlier, local police arrested four other people for having sex with underage girl.
Last month, Cam Pha Town police arrested a local mining industry executive for a similar offense.
